Adventurist and fundraiser Steve Hill MBE has shared his disbelief at being announced as a winner at the This Is Manchester Awards on Thursday night.
Steve was nominated for the 'Individual Making a Difference in the Community' award for his work the Team Hill Charitable Trust charity.
The deputy headteacher at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School in Shaw was representing Oldham on the night, and said he was shocked to be announced as one of the 18 award winners on the night.
Steve said: "To be nominated for and then shortlisted for an award was very special indeed and I wasn’t expecting anything more than that - just to go along and enjoy the evening.
"But when my name was read out as the winner, I really couldn’t believe it.
"I was totally gobsmacked. It was a very special moment indeed."
Steve was back in school this morning and he said it was "great" to share the award with the children in his class who were "very excited".
The awards show, which recognises some of the most outstanding venues and people in Greater Manchester, was held at The Hilton Hotel on Deansgate.
Steve said the evening was "amazing" and that he felt "very honoured" to have been representing Oldham at the event.
He added: "I’d like to thank everyone for their continued support and encouragement over the years.
"This award is about the great team of people who are part of Team Hill Charitable Trust and who continually support the work of the Charity and our mission to help make a positive difference in the world."
Looking ahead, Steve said he will be continuing to raise funds for the charity in the coming months and has been known for his donations to children around Christmas time in years past.
As for his upcoming challenges, Steve said he'll be returning to Uganda next year to run the Ugandan Marathon and to see the progress of some of the projects the charity has been supporting.
He added that he is also planning to run the width of Costa Rica from one coast to another to inspire children at St Joseph's RC.
