Talks to introduce sounds of bells from Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross

Saddleworth Team Rector Canon Sharon Jones is reopening discussions around the installation of an electronic bell system at iconic Holy Trinity Church in Dobcross.

Following discussions with parishioners, the Canon is planning to seek advice from the Diocesan Advisory Committee and Archdeacon.

Reverend Canon Jones said: "Covid led to many things being temporarily shelved.

"We would need legal agreement from the Diocese to proceed.

“The process is not straight forward as there would need to be a period of public consultation and a series of legal procedures.

“It is a long process but we hope the idea may come to fruition and bring joy to the Dobcross community.

“The parochial church council will be meeting in November to discuss next steps.”

In 2018, parishioners stood in studious groups listening intently to live tests of electronic peal of bells at the Woods Lane church.

The tests were provided by an expert from Smith of Derby clockmakers since 1856, who service the church clock.

The audience heard a CD of a wide range and variety of tunes from favourite hymns to rousing anthems, tempered by music suitable for nuptials or more sombre occasions.

At the time, the test brought a reaction, particularly on social media, with a shoal of enthusiastic comments backing the plan to instal electronic chimes.

One said: “The times at which the bells will be rung is very important in making a final decision.

"As a feature of traditional village life I applaud the efforts of the church to reintroduce bell ringing.”

The Grade II-listed church was built in 1787 and stands at the heart of the village in the Dobcross Conservation Area.

Substantial restoration took place between 2003 and 2007 and the church boasts a superb auditorium for concerts with outstanding acoustics.

Holy Trinity hosts regular services including on Sundays at 9.30am.
