More than 40 soldiers’ names missing from the Royton Park War Memorial will be added as part of work on Oldham’s war memorials to prepare for Remembrance Sunday next month.
The names of the Royton soldiers – 32 from WWI and 10 from WWII – will be added to the granite monument after the Royal British Legion found they had been forgotten.
Amanda Chadderton, leader of the Oldham council, said: “Oldham has a proud history of acknowledging and celebrating our brave men and women, and I’m pleased to have been able to fund the work which will see more of our heroes remembered.”
Both the Royton War Memorial and the Pots & Pans Memorial in Saddleworth will also be cleaned up by the council ahead of Remembrance Sunday on November 14.
Flower beds will be tidied and litter will be removed from the memorial spaces.
The memorial in Saddleworth will continue to receive treatment to dull the graffiti ahead of the services next month.
Work to repair the pointing, surrounding stonework and reattach the bronze plaques is also planned in time for its 100-year anniversary in 2023.
Remembrance Sunday services are scheduled to take place at the war memorials throughout Oldham where people will also be able to place wreaths to pay their respects.
