Oldham’s MPs have called for a change in Government following the resignation of Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
Prime Minister Liz Truss has faced increasing calls to resign after she was forced to reverse course and sack chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng after their controversial mini-budget, which included tax cuts for those on more than £150,000, caused financial chaos.
She was dealt another blow yesterday with the departure of Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
She has been replaced by Grant Shapps – who was Transport Secretary under Boris Johnson.
Her resignation was apparently due to breaking rules by sending an official document from a personal email address.
In her resignation letter, Ms Braverman said: “I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign,” – in what most have interpreted as a dig at the Prime Minister.
Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon said: “Every single day there is a new disaster in the Tory party.
“To lose a Chancellor is one thing but to lose a Chancellor and Home Secretary in the space of a week is a sign of a Conservative in complete chaos.
“We cannot afford this any longer – Britain deserves better than Liz Truss.
“We need a Labour government that will put the country first.”
Failsworth MP Angela Rayner said: “The Tory Government is falling apart at the seams.
“Both the Home Secretary and the Chancellor were appointed and then sacked within a matter of weeks. It’s ridiculous.
“We have had weeks of U-turns and the issues dealt with by the Home Secretary – such as security and public safety – need a much less chaotic backdrop to be done properly.
“If the Government can’t even manage the basics, they need to step aside and make way for people who can. We don’t just need a change of Home Secretary, we need a change of Government.”
Commenting on Twitter, Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, said: "Former Home Secretary Braverman shared an immigration document on her private phone which was market-sensitive and in breach of the ministerial code.
"Her resignation letter was nothing short of a threat to the Prime Minister.
"What an absolute rabble.”
The MP added the hashtags #UnfitForOffice #GeneralElectionNow.
