Dogs are to be allowed on the Metrolink until at least the New Year although a pilot scheme is almost at its end.

The pets were permitted on the network for three months from August 1 as a part of a pledge by Andy Burnham.

Although the pilot scheme is almost at its end, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said this week dogs are to be allowed on the Metrolink until at least the New Year while the authorities trawl through more than 2,000 responses to a consultation.

There is no cost to the owners, although there are several rules in relation to issues such as cleanliness and safety.

The consultation closes at the end of this month and the responses are said to be important in whether the pilot scheme becomes a permanent scheme.

A decision is due in the New Year.

Back in August, Mr Burnham said: "We want the Bee Network to work for everybody and for public transport to be as accessible as possible. A pilot scheme allowing non-assistance dogs on Metrolink was one of the pledges I made when I was re-elected as mayor, and I want to thank TfGM and KeolisAmey Metrolink for working together to make this a reality.

"I would now urge everyone who uses Metrolink during this period, including owners and those without dogs, to take part in the survey to provide us with the valuable insight we need to inform whether or not we make this permanent."

This week Danny Vaughan, TfGM's Head of Metrolink, said: “I want to thank everyone who has taken part in the survey so far, but I would urge everyone who has a view to have their say before it closes.

“Every response will help local leaders make an informed decision on whether to make this permanent or not."
