A young woman has been left with life-changing injuries after being hit by a tram yesterday, Thursday.
The 21-year-old woman, a pedestrian, was struck by a tram in Chorlton yesterday, Thursday, October 6, leaving her with life-changing injuries.
The incident happened on the Rochdale to East Didsbury line and affected Oldham services.
As the tram approached the St Werburgh’s tram stop, which is completely segregated from the road, the woman attempted to cross the tramway south towards Sidbury Road and was hit by the tram, which was travelling at around 20 mph.
Emergency services attended the scene and the woman was taken to hospital.
Specialist officers have been deployed to support her and her family.
Airport tram services were also affected.
It’s the second incident to happen on the network in fewer than two weeks, after a tram derailed in Manchester on Monday, September 26.
Greater Manchester Police's Serious Crash Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now looking to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident and are appealing for any CCTV or phone footage.
They can be contacted on 0161 856 4741, quoting reference number 1485-061022.
Danny Vaughan, Transport for Greater Manchester's head of Metrolink, added: “This is a deeply upsetting incident and our thoughts are with the woman and her family.
“This incident is now being investigated by the police and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time, other than to say TfGM and the Metrolink operator, KAM, will do whatever we can to assist with the investigation.”
