A boxer from Oldham has added to his winning streak this week after moving to victory in a ‘sensational’ match on Saturday.
Leyton Collymore, from Lees, moved to 5-0 on Saturday night (September 24) against his opponent, Vasif Mamedov, in his fifth ever professional boxing fight.
At the AJ Bell Stadium in Eccles, the 25-year-old was top of the bill on Gary Booths Manchester 31 Promotion Show and didn’t disappoint his “loyal and ever-growing supporters” in the fight, according to his family.
Collymore’s coach and father, John Carr, said: “Leyton looked calm and in control, even though Mamedov definitely came to spoil the party.”
Mr Carr said Leyton delivered a “sensational display of boxing against another tough durable opponent” and was just “too slick” with his footwork to dodge Mamedov’s attacks.
The referee scored the bout 60-54 in favour of Collymore, meaning he won all six rounds.
The fight was the boxer’s fifth-ever professional fight against another top-class opponent in the last 12 months.
Leyton has been moving up the ranks for the past four and a half years after he hung up his Muay Thai gloves for boxing.
The ‘team Collymore’ family said: “Leyton looked in control from the first bell and certainly showed everyone again why he is tipped to gain major honours in the near future.
“The victory on Saturday night will now hopefully set Leyton up for a big fight to the end of the year.
“Oldham certainly has got a rising star.”
The boxer, who also works as a fitness coach and personal trainer where he teaches Thai boxing at Knuckles Muay Thai gym on Huddersfield Road, rose to the top in Muay Thai over the course of a decade before moving on to boxing.
As a Muay Thai champ, he fought worldwide and was even ranked third in the UK and internationally in the sport.
Now, however, his mum, Angela Collymore, said Leyton is “determined” to become a world champion in boxing while his coach, Mr Carr, and manager, Joe Pennington, told The Oldham Times last week that they plan on pushing Leyton to step up in class.
In the next 12 months, Leyton will be trying to reach for area titles, English titles and eventually international titles.
