Tears of joy were shed at GCSE results day for North Chadderton School after students received their results.

Since 2019, GCSE grades have been graded on a system from 9 to 1, rather than A* to G – with 9 being the highest grade.

According to exams regulator Ofqual, grades 8 and 9 are roughly equivalent to an A*, with 7 equivalent to an A. All grades 4 and above are considered a pass.

Student Leo Nicholson, aged 16, attained all 7s and above, with a grade 9 in English language.

Now off to sixth form, Leo said: “I’m planning on going to sixth form to do maths, physics, geography, and Spanish – and hoping to do family law in the future as a barrister.”

It was a tearful results day for student Erin Ellaby – but for a good reason: she passed Maths.

Maths teacher Rob Jones added: “She worked so hard, an absolutely perfect pupil for the whole year and she thoroughly deserves that and it’s all down to her – nothing to do with me really.”

Student Jack Fawcett came to results day dressed in a Latics shirt and a pair of crocs – which he was adamant should be included in his photograph.

After doing better than expected, Jack plans to study English, PE, and sociology at A-level – and had a few words to share on the Latics now Frank Rothwell owns the team: “I think it’s a good move in the right direction, but hoping we’re going to go up in a couple of years – maybe not this year.”

Now, she plans to study medicine at university – after she completes biology, chemistry, and English in sixth form.

"They’ve done us proud, themselves proud, and their families proud – especially given the disruption they’ve had to their education over the last few years.

“They’ve shown determination, resilience, and commitment – and we couldn’t be more proud.”
