A Saddleworth group has announced two key events for history buffs and society members to learn more about the area.
The Saddleworth Historical Society has announced two meetings in September and October for members to enjoy a unique presentation.
On Wednesday, September 14, society members and members of the public are invited to attend Saddleworth Museum Gallery on High Street, Uppermill, for the first special event.
The meeting will start at 7.30pm and will feature an illustrated presentation by Adam Bowett, an independent furniture historian, entitled ‘The Tudor Bed – Its Authenticity’.
The society then has its annual general meeting followed by its members meeting on Wednesday, October 12 at 7.30pm – again at Saddleworth Museum Gallery.
After the meeting, those in attendance can enjoy an illustrated presentation by Mike Buckley, entitled ‘Saddleworth’s Merchants and Manufacturers; their Architectural Legacy’.
The meetings are free for society members to attend but non-members and members of the public will be charged £3 for entry.
Refreshments will be available for those who attend both meetings.
The society has also said there are no meetings for the Saddleworth Civic Trust for either September or October, though any changes to this will be publicised.
The organisation arranges lectures, events and meet-ups on a wide variety of historical but local topics.
Since its inception in 1966, the society has published more than 20 books covering the history of Saddleworth.
Although its interests and activities are wide and varied, the group primarily enjoys studies into landscape and settlement, family history, domestic textile industry, the industrial revolution and its impact on the growth of the Saddleworth villages in the 19th and 20th centuries.
