Tributes have been paid to the man who collapsed and died at his stall in Tommyfield Market on Friday (July 8) morning.

Abdulhamid Ajmid was at his stall, Stationery Corner, when he collapsed at around 8.40am.

He was treated at the scene by North West Ambulance Service and was taken to hospital, however it was later confirmed that he had died.

Abdulhamid's stall has been covered and a sign from Oldham Council states the stall will be "temporarily closed until further notice".

Flowers have been laid  in front of the shop, with messages offering condolences.

One of the messages on the flowers described Abdulhamid as "a much-loved trader - a true gentleman with a smile for everyone".

Another message said: "Rest in peace Abdulhamid. You will be missed."

The popular trader ran the stationery stall for 40 years and had lived in Oldham 43 years of his life.

He spoke to The Oldham Times in late May ahead of the Jubilee weekend, when he explained he had a picture of the Queen in his house and believed the closure of Tommyfield Market for the Thursday and Friday was a good thing.

On Facebook, many people offered their condolences and shared their fond memories of him.

Christine Shyne wrote: "He was a lovely man always very helpful when we bought off his stall, we bought bunting from his stall for the Jubilee and he was saying how he loved the Queen."

"This is just so sad."

Former Mayor of Oldham Council Cllr Jennifer Harrison added: "I've bought lots things from him over the years and he was always very helpful.
