A new shop has opened in Greenfield this week.
Weaver & Wilde, an award-winning coffee shop in Uppermill, has launched a new shop ‘Weaver & Wilde Groceries & Provisions,’ which promises to have quality fresh fruit and vegetables as well as ‘nice treats’ from independent and local producers.
The shop opened its doors to the public on Monday, June 20 at 8am.
Cal and Thomas Rowson-Codd run the shop, which has opened in the former Coal Hut on Chew Valley Road.
Posting on Facebook the evening before opening, the owners said: “Absolutely bloody knackered. Holiday like a distant memory now
“All ready for the big day tomorrow. Up at 3am for market.
“Doors open at 8am.
“Thank you for everyone's support. It means so much.
“See you all in the morning. Feel free to bring Thomas a two tea bag tea with no milk and Cal a stong flat white.”
Speaking to The Oldham Times, Cal said: “It’s been really well received, it’s been great – it’s been so much more than we thought, than we expected.
“It’s been a very warm welcome to opening in the village that we love.”
They decided to launch the new shop as they missed the town’s former greengrocer, which closed in August 2020.
Speaking to The Oldham Times in April, Cal said: “We live in Greenfield and people are missing having that amenity on their doorstep.
“The only alternative is either coming into Uppermill or going into Tesco.
“Supermarket produce ain’t great, it’s been in the supply chain for a while.
“It’s not necessarily the most environmentally friendly and the price paid to the farmer isn’t necessarily particularly favourable.
“And I just don’t like Tesco!”
The shop features a range of small suppliers and independent businesses – despite its small size.
“It’s not big,” Cal continued, “it’s about as big as a shoebox – but it’s got height. We’re used to working in small spaces because we do in Uppermill. We managed to turn it into a TARDIS and get quite a lot in.
“We can get amenity back into the village, we can get good quality produce that’s affordable back in to the village.
“And because we partner with a lot of small, independent suppliers and a lot of local producers we can extend what we do with them.”
Turning two years old in October, Weaver & Wilde coffee house in Uppermill has won numerous awards, including TripAdvisor’s 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award, which recognises businesses that earn consistently good tourist reviews, and a North West Enterprise award.
