A SALON with more than 80 outlets across the UK is leaving Oldham.
Supercuts in Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre closed its doors for the final time on Saturday and announced it is leaving the borough.
A sign pictured on the salon’s window reads: “This salon will permanently close on Saturday, April,30, 2022.
“Your nearest Supercuts will be located in the Arndale Centre in Manchester City Centre.
"Thank you all for your loyalty and understanding.
“The Supercuts Oldham Team”.
The salon’s departure comes just weeks after the Blue Inc store in Spindles launched a closing down sale, with up to 70 per cent off some items.
The double loss follows the departure of H&M from the shopping centre in February and the closure of Debenhams and TJ Hughes which both shut down operations in Spindles during the pandemic.
In a statement responding to the closure of Supercuts an Oldham Council spokesperson said: “We are sorry to see Supercuts leave Spindles.
“We had been liaising with them to find an alternative unit within a higher footfall area of the centre as part of our redevelopment plans, but they made the decision to close the Oldham branch.
“Our Get Oldham Working team is available to help any staff affected by this news and can provide advice and support on their next steps.
“The redevelopment of Spindles will transform the centre to provide better shopping and lots of new attractions including a new Tommyfield Market, events space, arts and heritage archive and co-working space.
“Work will soon start to take place and the centre and parking will remain open as usual. Please continue to support your local market and high street as much as you can.”
The council submitted the planning application for the redevelopment of Spindles in March as it looks to rehouse Tommyfield Market where TJ Hughes was based and create a new events and office space on the first floor for local businesses and Oldham Council services.
The plans also include the creation of a new entrance to the relocated split-level market with a food court connecting to Parliament Square and a dedicated retail market linking to the shopping mall.
The council, which purchased Spindles in October 2020, has said the shopping centre will remain open during the redevelopment as they look to have the work completed by the end of 2023.
