A LARGE fire broke out in Saddleworth last night.

At around 9pm last night, April 27 a blaze ignited on Ladcastle Road in Saddleworth.

Crews from four fire stations attended with Mossley Fire Station taking the lead.

Ross Mallinson, a firefighter at Chadderton Fire Station, said: “Fire engines attended from Chadderton, Mossley, Hollins, Oldham, and Stalybridge. A Wildfire Unit was also there.

“We were there for two to three hours from around 9pm.”

Joseph Anchor,22, came across the fire while driving through the area and captured the blaze on video.

Joseph said: "I was driving with a friend and we stumbled across the fire. The flames had engulfed all the trees and shrubs leading up to the road.

"We got out and made sure the emergency services had been notified and directed traffic back down the lane. The police then arrived and took control of the scene. The fire brigade arrived not long after and extinguished the flames very quickly."

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) spokesperson said: “At 8:47pm on Wednesday, April 27 four fire engines from Oldham, Hollins, Mossley and Chadderton fires stations along with the wildfire unit from Stalybridge, the wildfire support unit and drone unit attended a fire on Ladcastle Road, Uppermill, Oldham.

“On arrival crews encountered a fire involving woodland measuring approximately 50 metres by 50 metres. Firefighters used hose reels, beaters and jets to bring the fire under control. Crews were in attendance for just over two hours.”

An earlier version of this story said five fire engines attended. GMFRS has now confirmed that four fire engines attended.
