THE centre of Rochdale is on shutdown today after police were confronted by a teenager with a weapon.
Officers were called to Dane Street at around 3.10am to a report of suspicious circumstances, and arrived at the scene to discover a suspicious item.
During the response, police were also confronted by a teenager with a weapon.
As a precaution, a cordon was put in place, with a controlled explosion carried out on the suspicious item by specialist officers.
The cordon remained in place throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article and possession of a firearm, and is in custody.
A police spokesperson said: "At around 3.10am, we received a report of suspicious circumstances on Dane Street, Rochdale.
"Officers attended and discovered a suspicious item.
"As a precaution, a cordon was put in place and EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] attended and carried out a controlled explosion. The item has since been confirmed as not viable or suspicious.
"During the initial response, officers were confronted by a man with a weapon.
"A 17-year-old male was safely detained and arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear. He remains in custody at this time.
"Enquiries are ongoing."
