The Oldham Times visited Lancaster Park on Easter Monday – where we were able to feed some of the 20 lambs waiting for their breakfast.

The 25-acre farm also includes an 871m nature walk, as well as a petting barn and even giant tortoises.

Each of the lambs that members of the public can feed was either born in a group of triplets, or had been orphaned.

When lambs are born as triplets, farmers often prefer to remove one of the lambs from its mother, reducing pressure on the mother, so she only needs to produce enough milk for two.

Chloe Walker, who works at the farm, said: “The mum can only have room to feed two lambs, so that means the other ones will come to a different farm, like us, and then they’ll get bottle-fed, by us and the customers.”

The lambs at Lancaster Park and Farm, which opened in 2011, are fed from bottles three times a day, with two feedings open to the public.

A bottle of milk costs £3, cash only, with public lamb feedings taking place at 9.30am and 2.30pm.

Those wishing to feed the lambs in the afternoon are advised to get there early – as the level of interest can mean not everyone gets a go.

The lambs receive three bottles each in the morning and five bottles each in the afternoon.

Though a general entry ticket can be purchased using a card online in advance, this does not include a bottle of milk.

Katie Brown, 26, works at the farm.

She explained how she prepares the milk, saying: “What we do is, we put water in, we put powder in and then we give it a mix.

“We put 130ml in each bottle to make sure each lamb is getting enough.”

The farm has plans for expansion too.

Alan, who works at the farm, said a new building would be opening soon: “There’s going to be a cafe in there, there’s going to be a soft play area in there where the children can have parties.”

The park and farm are situated directly opposite Mills Hill station, so are easily accessible by rail in just a few minutes from Manchester Victoria and Rochdale, both of which connect to Oldham’s trams.

Parking is also available on site.
