UPDATE: Two young men dead after Royton crash between car and motorbike
A ROAD in Royton closed for several hours on Good Friday after a crash between a car and a motorbike.
All emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to High Barn Street at around 11am.
The road was closed between the crossroads with Oldham Road and the roundabout with Edge Lane Street and Milton Street, with a police cordon in place for the rest of the morning and throughout the afternoon.
A screen was used to cover the scene of the crash, although it was later removed to reveal a motorbike on its side and other debris scattered across the road.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a car on High Barn Street in Royton.
“One fire engine from Chadderton and the Technical Response Unit from Leigh attended the scene, where firefighters worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service.”
Cllr Amanda Chadderton, a councillor for the ward and the deputy leader of Oldham Council, tweeted: “There has been a serious accident near the centre of Royton, emergency services all on site and asking people to avoid the area.
“Thinking of the people affected by this and their families.”
As the emergency services started to disperse at around 3pm, a lone police officer was left at the scene of the crash making observations and taking photographs.
Meanwhile, on the edge of the police cordon, a crowd of onlookers assembled outside The Railway pub, some of them in tears.
At the time of writing, High Barn Street remained closed and the condition of those involved in the crash was unconfirmed.
The Oldham Times has asked Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service for comment.
