Greater Manchester’s new cycle hire scheme has seen more than 100,000km collectively ridden since it launched to the public in Manchester City Centre in November 2021.
This is equivalent to a quarter of the distance to the moon or two-and-a-half times ridden around the world.
Anyone taking a trip into Manchester city centre can expect to find the bikes dotted around locations such as Piccadilly Station, Oxford Road, and the University of Salford.
There have been over 39,000 journeys taken on the ‘Bee bikes’, with over 10,400 active users.
Bikes are currently available from stations around Oxford Road, at the University of Salford and at MediaCity, giving an extra option for commuters, cross-city travellers and students.
The use of the bikes has been closely monitored since the scheme launched and learning will be fed in as the rollout continues later this year, when the scheme expands and bikes become available in Trafford.
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “We wanted to create a cycle hire scheme in GM so that more people had access to an affordable, accessible, and sustainable form of transport.
“It’s great to see how the scheme has been received by the people of GM so far. Seeing the number of people riding around Oxford Road, the University of Salford and MediaCity on our iconic yellow bikes has been brilliant – and I’m really looking forward to more bikes becoming available in the future.”
Phil Ellis, CEO of Beryl – the company that runs the scheme – said: “I'm delighted we've been able to reach this milestone already in Greater Manchester and I think it's testament to the important role that bike share can play in an integrated urban transport system.”
As the weather improves the Mayor is also urging families to boost their confidence and get out and about cycling.
Oldhamers can even sign up for a range of free cycling courses, which include ‘learn to ride’ sessions, or ‘road ready’ sessions for those who know how to ride.
The Mayor continued: “I would encourage anyone who wants to try cycling, but perhaps lacks a bit of confidence on two wheels, to give the cycling courses that Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) offers a go.
“They will help you get back into the saddle with more confidence, learn a thing or two about fixing your bike and enable you to get out as a family.
“Embracing active travel into your daily lives is great for your health, your wellbeing and could even save some money – especially if you are able to leave the car at home for local journeys now and again.”
A range of courses are available, including one-to-one sessions, cycle maintenance courses and even family confidence training, which provides guidance on how to safely cycle as a group on the road, giving families the chance to get out together this spring.
