The 12-week ‘team’ programme by Groundwork Greater Manchester and the Prince’s Trust for unemployed 19–25-year-olds in Oldham starts next month.

Youngsters who struggle with low confidence can embark on a free but full-time 12-week programme throughout the summer to help them get back into work.

With scheduled activities, outdoor experiences like rock climbing and CV and interview sessions, those on the programme can expect to develop their skills, self-esteem and employability prospects.

For three weeks, the team will deliver a new project for the benefit of the local community in Oldham.

There is also an opportunity to gain work experience via a two-week placement.

Every young person enrolled can gain qualifications in emergency first aid, money and budget management, carbon literacy and a Prince’s Trust Qualification in employability, teamwork and community skills.

One recipient of the programme last year, Faiza, said she struggled to find work despite having a degree in engineering.

The 22-year-old from Oldham said she joined the programme to get back into a working routine and to gain invaluable experience.

Faiza said: “I helped peers grow in confidence and surpassed my own expectations.

"By doing Prince's Trust, I gained experience in leading and working with a team which is something I can now move on to do in my new job."

Faiza landed a London-based job in data engineering at the end of the programme.

Jo Shaw, Groundwork Prince’s Trust team leader said: “The course is a great experience for anyone who is looking to improve their prospects.

“Young people who feel like they could do with something to help them get on track should come along to the registration day and see what the course is all about.

“I personally think every young person should complete the team programme as it opens up so many doors and helps you to improve key skills including confidence, leadership, managing feelings and working with others, and gives that self-belief that a lot of young people lack”, she added.

Ms Shaw stands as testimony to the success of the programme having completed it herself in 2001 and now works as the team leader in Oldham.

Registration takes place on Wednesday, May 11 between 11am and 3pm at Shaw and Crompton Parish Council.

Applicants must be in receipt of benefits to apply, though the scheme does not affect benefits payments and any travel costs will be reimbursed.
