A man has been jailed after racially abusing and threatening to stab a Metrolink worker at Oldham King Street station.

Nicholas Casey, of no fixed abode, was at the Metrolink station in central Oldham on December 15, 2021, when a member of staff asked him not to smoke on the platform.

Casey, 51, reacted by racially abusing the member of staff and threatening to stab them with a screwdriver.

He initially appeared at Tameside Magistrates' Court on December 17, 2021 where he pleaded not guilty.

Casey then failed to attend the subsequent trial at Manchester Magistrates' Court on March 21, 2022 and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

On March 24, he appeared on a warrant and pleaded guilty at Manchester Magistrates' Court. He was sentenced the same day.

He received a public order offence which would have been eight weeks in prison, however as it was racially aggravated, the court applied a racial uplift of eight weeks.

Casey was also given another two weeks in prison for failing to attend a previous trial, taking his total sentence to 18 weeks.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £128 and to forfeit the screwdriver for destruction.
