A SHAW pub has been forced to close after Storm Franklin brought havoc to the borough over the weekend.

The Black Ladd on Buckstones Road closed ‘with immediate effect’ after flooding on Sunday.

Paul Mahon who owns The Black Ladd said: “It’s one thing after another at this place. We had Covid and now its flooded.

“During the storms the whole drainage system started to back up. The grids outside couldn’t cope with the masses of water, and it found a way into the building.

“I came on Sunday, and it was just flooded everywhere.”

Paul hopes the pub will be able to reopen this week.

He said: “I’m aiming for Friday and anything before is a bonus.”

The closure came as flood alerts were issued across Greater Manchester, with two 'danger to life' flood warnings issued.

On Sunday, the River Mersey burst its banks placing both East and West Didsbury under the highest warning level with some residents told to evacuate their homes.

A flood alert was also put in place for the upper River Irwell catchment with Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall, and a flood warning was issued for the River Roch at Littleborough.

On Monday, Stannybrook Road closed both ways due to flooding from Daisy Nook Garden Centre to Ashton Road.

The flooding of the pub followed the toppling of one of Greengate Jamia Masjid Mosque’s minarets on Friday.

The damage to minaret came as an amber weather warning for strong winds was enforced across the region as Storm Eunice made its way through the area.

Firefighters and police officers secured the scene with a 50-metre cordon and Oldham Council issued a warning for anyone walking near the Greengate Street mosque to take care.

The council also issued a ‘dangerous structure’ warning concerning Candlelight Night Club on Fountain Street where tiles came off the roof. The footpath next to the building was closed.

A tree meanwhile caused destruction after falling into a gable elevation on 95, Ripponden Road. Building control attended and made the area safe.

Trees also fell on Gateshead Road, Delph blocking the road, on Verne Drive blocking the car park, on the Peels Arms car park in Springhead, on a telephone wire on Denton Lane, Chadderton, on Fowler Street, Hollins, York Street and in Failsworth Cemetery.
