DEVOTED Laurel and Hardy film buffs ensured the first meeting of their club went off without a classical tag from their heroes, “another fine mess…”
More than 25 people attended the event at Springhead Liberal Club at Oldham Road Springhead.
The appreciation club, the brainchild of Garry Errock, is called “The Sons of the Desert” and is open to men and women.
At the meeting they showed “Sons of the Desert” and “Night Owls” and sang “Lonesome Pine” and “We are the Sons of the Desert.”
The Sons of the Desert clubs are called “tents” and are named after Laurel and Hardy films. And because of Oldham's owl emblem their tent will be called Night Owls.
The club is organised using quirky titles: Garry Errock is Vice Sheik (Sheik in charge of Vice), Steve Hewitt Grand Sheik, Mark “Rubber Legs” Rowe is Grand Vizier (secretary), David Wood Sub Vice Vizier (treasurer), Board Members At Large will include; Wayne Smith, Tim O’Donnell and Thomas Wood. (Titles will be rotated annually).
David Wood said: “Laurel and Hardy films are funny when you watch them at home, but even more funny in a room full of people all laughing together.
“A really good time was had by all – it was good clean fun!”
The next meeting is Tuesday, February 1 at the Liberal club, with a nominal £1 for each attendee.
