READERS of The Oldham Times have picked a restaurant in Chadderton as the best place in the borough for a curry.
On Saturday, to mark National Curry Week – which was between October 4 and October 10 – we asked our readers for their recommendations on social media.
And it was a close outcome, but the winner with five mentions from a total of around 40 comments was Grand Millon.
The restaurant on Featherstall Road topped another restaurant in Chadderton, Paprika Delight, as well as Westwood East in Oldham – both with three mentions.
According to Grand Millon's website, it has been giving the borough 'the real taste of Indian and sub-continent cuisine' for almost 30 years.
Its popularity on social media is backed up by its reviews on TripAdvisor, as it has a rating of four out of five from more than 100 reviews.
On TripAdvisor, one reviewer from January, when the UK was still in lockdown, commented: "During the pandemic, everyone at the restaurant has been fantastic.
"We regularly eat in, and have been having takeaways during this time.
"The staff are often extremely busy but still polite, friendly and helpful.
"This is our favourite restaurant and at no time has the quality of the food dropped."
Another commented: "The food is second to none and the staff are friendly and attentive – without being over the top.
"Best Indian restaurant in Oldham in my opinion," they added.
Other restaurants with multiple mentions were Amaani, which is over the border in Tameside, plus Blue Tiffin on Shaw Road and The New Sagor on Lees Road.
There were around 10 other restaurants with a single mention, in an indication of the range of curry available to Oldhamers and others from outside the borough.
But for some people, there is no replacement for home cooking.
One reader suggested their mother's house was the best place for a curry in the borough, while another reader suggested their grandmother's house was the best.
We will have to leave them to decide that one for themselves...
