A NIGHTCLUB in Oldham has announced the controversial “Godfather of Grime” Wiley is making an appearance in December.
Wiley, whose real name is Richard Kylea Cowie Jr, is set to perform at Liquid on Bank Holiday Monday, two days after Christmas.
The nightclub on Retiro Street in Oldham made the announcement in a post on social media, which also included a video of the grime artist.
The post said: “It’s official. The Godfather of Grime is coming!”
And in the video, Wiley said: “Yo. This is Wiley. Catch me in Liquid in Oldham in December. Make sure you’re there, because I’ll be there.”
Liquid’s announcement is a controversial one, given 42-year-old Wiley is facing charges of assault by beating and burglary with intent to cause criminal damage at the moment.
The grime artist appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Monday last week and is due to appear again on Monday next week.
He is charged with breaking in to the London flat of former kickboxer, now singer-songwriter Ali Jacko, assaulting him and smashing plates on August 28.
He has not made a plea to these charges.
In 2020, Wiley also made headlines when he was suspended from Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for a string of posts criticised as “anti-Semitic”.
His manager at the time, John Woolf, who is Jewish, cut all ties with him, and there were calls for the MBE awarded to the grime artist back in 2018 for services to music to be revoked.
In an interview with Sky News, Wiley said: “I just want to apologise for generalising and going outside of the people who I was talking to within the workspace and workplace I work in.
“My comments should not have been directed to all Jews or Jewish people.
“I want to apologise for generalising, and to apologise for comments that were looked at as anti-Semitic.”
In spite of the controversy surrounding the grime artist, Liquid’s announcement received a positive response on social media, with a large number of revellers from Oldham tagging one another in the post and encouraging one another to get tickets for Wiley’s appearance.
The Oldham Times has approached the nightclub for a comment.
