This week’s chosen pub is The Rose of Lancaster in Chadderton where customers can enjoy homemade meals and traditional ales brewed a stone’s throw away.
Here pub landlord Antony Walton and partner Angela Kilduff, answer our Q&A.
Who are the bar staff and what are their names?
There’s a loyal team of 40.
Can you give us some history about the pub?
The pub has been in existence since 1804 and was originally called the Rose and Thistle before becoming the only pub in UK called Rose of Lancaster, around 1812. It remained an old coaching inn for the rest of the century and into the 20th century.
What is the pub known for?
Traditional JW Lees pub, catering for families and locals, serving traditional ales brewed at our local brewery, just a stone’s throw away.
Is food served and if so, what is on the menu?
Yes, Our favourites include homemade steak and ale or cheese and onion pies, freshly beer battered fish and chips or the brewery tower burger.
Is there a beer garden?
Yes, it looks over the Rochdale to Manchester canal.
What is the most popular drink served?
Traditional ales such as our own JW Lees Bitter, Manchester Pale Ale, draught Stout or our lager range consists of Original or Manchester Craft.
What is your most memorable moment at the pub?
Charity fundraising each year, this last month we donated £16,000 to Maggie’s in Oldham.
Do you have an entertainment line-up?
Yes, we have Tuesday quiz nights, Thursday “Monthly” tribute nights and live sport in our tap room.
Have you faced any challenges within the industry over the last year?
Lockdown has been tough for us all, but we are pleased to be open again with trade getting back to normal.
What is best thing about running the pub?
The local community and seeing young staff starting their adult lives and developing skills to take into their chosen careers.
What is the worst thing about running the pub?
The good times always conquer the bad ones.
What is you perfect hangover cure?
JW Lees Stout, a dark and brooding ale.
