RUGBY league legend Kevin Sinfield is in the running for a bravery award after completing seven marathons in seven days and raising more than £2m for Motor Neurone Disease.
Former Leeds Rhinos hero Kevin Sinfield, from Saddleworth, was inspired to take on the gruelling marathon challenge in honour of ex-teammate Rob Burrow who was diagnosed with the disease two years ago.
The "7 in 7" challenge – which referenced Burrow’s old shirt number at Leeds – initially hoped to raise £77,777 but ultimately generated an incredible £2.2m after Sinfield completed it last December.
Further funds were raised by those inspired to emulate Sinfield, while medical research charity LifeArc agreed last month to match the £500,000 of the money Sinfield raised which had been earmarked for research.
The sporting superstar, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours this year, has now made the final 10 selection stage in the Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2021 Celebrity Hero category.
Sinfield, 40, known affectionately by Leeds fans as "Sir Kev", has reached the Celebrity Hero selection stage out of 300 nominations overall chosen by the public.
The other categories are Act Of Courage, Active Agers, Against All Odds, Charity Champion, Coronavirus Hero, Young Hero and Hero Pet.
Four finalists will be selected in each category and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 5.
Falklands War hero Simon Weston chairs the judging panel and presents the awards.
Amplifon is a leading global hearing specialist operating in 26 countries with 105 stores across the UK.
