THERE were balloons, afternoon tea, cinema, pop corn and, of course, sherry as the woman dubbed "super granny" by her family celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday.
Bertha Fitton became a centenarian at the Treelands Nursing Home in Westhill Road, Oldham where she now lives.
The former British Aerospace officer worker has outlived her husband Kenneth, who she met and married during the Second World War and her sons Anthony and Graham.
After the war Kenneth became a key part of the Boots the Chemist management team.
However, her granddaughters Nicola Fitton and Natalie Nugent, aged 43 and 42, were on hand yesterday and joined with staff at Treelands to ensure Bertha had a 100th birthday to remember.
Natalie told The Oldham Times: "She was a magnificent grandmother to us when we were growing up.
"She never went abroad for holidays, but she had a caravan at Towyn, near Rhyl in North Wales, where she took us every year during the summer holidays.
"Bertha would knit us a cardigan each in different colours."
Natalie, speaking ahead of the birthday celebration, said a big outdoor party was taking place at Treelands.
"There will be afternoon tea and we're having a cinema viewing with pop corn and a glass of sherry.
"It'll be fantastic."
Natalie has four children and Nicola has one, which means Bertha has a total of five greater grandchildren.
