Police have cordoned off part of a road after bones were discovered in woodland.

Officers were called at around 3pm on Saturday to an area of woodland, off Higginshaw Road in Oldham.

They were responding to reports that bones had been found in the woodland, and an investigation has now been launched to determine the nature of the remains.

It is believed the bones have now been recovered by police and will be forensically examined to establish exactly what they are.

At 9pm on Saturday an updated statement from the police confirmed that the bones recovered were not human bones.

A cordon remains in place while officers carry out their enquiries.
