A TREE has been planted on a Royton estate in memory of a 52-year-old community worker who died after a short illness last October.
Zerg Raja worked for First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO), as part of the Stronger Communities Team, and was a much- loved member of the organisation.
A respected community figure and “true gentleman”, Zerg’s tireless commitment to improving the lives of local people has led to the tribute.
His kindness, compassion, sense of humour and smile is said to have lit up FCHO and touched the lives of many.
Emma Cafferky, Stronger Communities manager, said: “Zerg was such a dedicated member of staff and friend to many. He was so well connected and committed to making a difference across Oldham in both his work and personal life projects.
“He worked tirelessly to create sustainable community projects and in particular he worked with a group of FCHO tenants on the Holly Estate area in Royton, to develop and grow their community garden.
“When our colleague Tim suggested we work with Limb to Limb to plant a tree in Zerg’s memory in this area, we thought that it was such a fitting tribute.
“We hope when colleagues, family and friends visit the tree, they will see it grow and develop and it will be a long-lasting memory to a wonderful person.”
Plans have been made to install a plaque for Zerg next year.
