THE future of a listed but derelict church in Shaw looks uncertain after its roof collapsed with piles of rubble deposited in the street.
Oldham Council officers were called out in the early hours of Thursday morning after bricks from St Paul’s Methodist Church fell into the road and the neighbouring Hobble Wobbles nursery in Chapel Street, Shaw.
Chapel Street was closed while engineers assessed the damage.
A council spokesperson said: "We got called to attend shortly after midnight Our first response team went along and confirmed there was a partial building collapse including a large part of the roof.
"Masonry had fallen into a nearby nursery.
"We had to close Chapel Street. We have put a temporary closure sign at Chapel Street to the side of the church.”
St Paul's has been disused for about 18 months.
