The futures of Mike Fondop, Dan Gardner, Harrison McGahey and Devarn Green are up in the air after Oldham Athletic issued their retained list.

The Oldham Times understands that forward Hallam Hope will leave the club after three years, along with Benny Couto, Brennan Dickenson, Ben Tollitt and Jordan Windass, youngsters Llyton Chapman, Frazer Cookson, Jake Forshaw, Oliver Kilner and goalkeeper Dan Langley. But the situation for Fondop, Gardner, McGahey and Green is not cut and dried and whether they stay or go seems, in part, dependent on budget savings elsewhere within the remaining squad.

Joe Nuttall is ending the season on loan at Cheltenham, where he has impressed manager Darrell Clarke and scored in Tuesday night's win over Peterborough, and could look to make the move permanent.

Kurt Willoughby is also understood to be enjoying his time in the Scottish Championship with Ayr.

If funds were able to be freed up then that may give Latics more scope to keep some of those whose contracts run out at the end of June.

Latics' retained list was published earlier today (Wednesday), including details of the loan players who ended the season with the National League side, but generally it painted a vague picture.

The club listed the players who are out of contract, but have not indicated whether any have been offered new deals or not.

A statement released by Latics read: "Following the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, Oldham Athletic can confirm the retained player list for the first team.

"In Contract: Tom Conlon, Joe Garner, Oliver Hammond, Shaun Hobson, Liam Hogan, Matt Hudson, Mark Kitching, Josh Lundstram, Kofi Moore, Magnus Norman, James Norwood, Joe Nuttall, Charlie Raglan, Alex Reid, Mark Shelton, Nathan Sheron, Will Sutton, Dan Ward, Kurt Willoughby.

"Out of Contract (June 2024): Llyton Chapman, Frazer Cookson, Benny Couto, Brennan Dickenson, Mike Fondop, Jake Forshaw, Dan Gardner, Devarn Green, Hallam Hope, Oliver Kilner, Dan Langley, Harrison McGahey, Ben Tollitt, Jordan Windass.

"Returned to Parent Club: Andrew Dallas (Barnsley), Sai Sachdev (Sheffield United), Ethan Walker (Blackburn Rovers).

"An update will be provided in due course on scholars from the Academy.

"We would like to thank the players who depart this summer and we wish them well in their future careers."

The Oldham Times understands Hope was told he is not part of manager Micky Mellon's future plans.

The former Carlisle United forward was signed by Keith Curle in the summer of 2021 and has played under six different managers in his time at Boundary Park.

His time with Latics was punctuated by injury, but he had an impact this season, scoring four key goals - including two in the derbies with Rochdale.

Fondop is among those facing an uncertain future. The 30-year-old ended the campaign with a brace to take his tally for the season into double figures, bouncing back from the disappointment of a four-game ban for his second sending off of the season.

The striker's first season with the club never got off the ground. He was brought in by John Sheridan at the end of the January transfer window for reinforcements as Latics battled the drop, but he managed only one game in League Two before being ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

Since then, however, he has become a cult figure and popular among fans.

Gardner has been admired for his midfield guile. He has struggled with injury but had a strong end to the season and demonstrated a passion for the club in his second spell.

McGahey was also signed by Curle in the summer of 2021. He came back from a career threatening back injury in October, the day after Micky Mellon was appointed manager and became a regular under the Scot.
