Avro manager Alex Frost is relishing the prospect of a local derby tomorrow at the Vestacare Stadium, with Wythenshawe Town the visitors in a match up which sees two teams with a combined total of 15 wins from their first 16 league games go head to head.

After suffering an undeserved defeat against Congleton Town just over two weeks ago, Frost’s side have come through two tough games against Burscough and Charnock Richard with maximum points and have now recorded eight wins in their first nine league fixtures.

However, Wythenshawe have had an equally impressive start, with seven wins out of seven and the former Ashton United defender admits for the first time this season, his side go into a league fixture as underdogs.

“There is no doubt that they are favourites to win this one,” said Frost. “They have probably got the biggest budget in the league and they have spent it well - their ambition is to make it to step four of the non-league pyramid as quickly as possible, and they were very close to having a crack at it last year when they just missed out on qualifying for the promotion play-off.

“They have made a tremendous start to this season, and I would be very surprised if they do not end up near the top of the league at the very least next April. But we have already shown this season that we are more than a match for anyone at this level on our day, and we will be looking to give them a very tough game tomorrow.”

The home side have a couple of injury doubts ahead of the big game, with full-back Jack Worrall and midfielder Jack Morrow both facing a race to prove their fitness.

However, Frost believes he has plenty of options available to him should he need to resort to a back-up plan.

“We knew when we put this squad together in pre-season there were going to be times when we would have to chop and change a bit because of injuries and player availability. We decided to go for quality rather than quantity, and it means that at times like this, I have every confidence that whatever starting XI we end up selecting will be extremely competitive.”

Tomorrow’s encounter is the first of four consecutive games for Avro against locally-based opposition, with trips to Prestwich Heys and Bury AFC’s temporary home in Radcliffe to be followed by a Manchester Premier Cup tie against Chadderton on Wednesday, October 12.
