Assistant manager Phil Edghill has hailed his Avro side’s mentality as ‘different class’ after they recorded a sixth successive win and clean sheet in all competitions with a 3-0 victory against Barnoldswick Town on Tuesday night.

The win came little more than 72 hours after a hard-fought success against Lower Breck in blistering heat, and was achieved with 10 of the same players who had started that encounter.

And Edghill was quick to pay tribute to the efforts of his players, who again gave a relentlessly energetic and committed display to ensure their side have now gone more than nine hours without conceding a goal.

“There were a lot of heavy legs after Saturday’s game, and a few minor niggles as well, which was totally understandable after the shift that the lads put in,” Edghill admitted.

“But they went away, did their recovery and showed up tonight ready to go again. Let’s not forget that Barnoldswick had scored 12 goals in five games before tonight so to pick up another clean sheet is a fantastic effort, different class from all of them.”

The visitors controlled the game from the outset, and took the lead just past the 20-minute mark when centre-half Geffry Ebhote headed home a corner delivered by Jake Cottrell from the right. Home keeper Jordan Gidley kept his side in the game but eventually the visitors’ pressure led to two goals in the last five minutes, a Michael Afuye header and a Jake Cottrell penalty after substitute Joe Rathbone had been brought down in the area.

Five wins out of five in the league means Avro sit top of the Premier Division at this early stage, but Edghill is staying grounded.

“We have had an amazing start, and I could not be more proud of the lads for what they have achieved so far,” said Edghill.

“But they know as well as I do that no one gets promoted in August, and that there are a few teams in this division who are just as driven to finish in the top two in April as we are.

“Our next league game is against Bury, they won their first three and will be looking to bounce back after losing against Prestwich, who have also won three out of four.

“It is an incredibly tough division in which to be successful; we have given ourselves a great platform on which to build, but that is all it is right now.”

Next up for Avro is an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie tomorrow at home against NECFL Premier side Albion Sports.

The club has never progressed beyond this stage of the competition, and Edghill says the players are relishing the opportunity to make history.

He said: “I remember the buzz around the place when I was at Curzon Ashton and we got to the second round proper. These players know what it means to this club to get the First Qualifying Round - it would be a massive achievement. I have no doubt that we will get more of the same from them tomorrow afternoon.”
