Avro manager Alex Frost admits he ‘cannot wait to get started’ ahead of the start of pre season training this week but has also conceded that improving on last season’s sixth place finish in the NWCL Premier Division is a ‘massive challenge’, writes Liam Bambridge.

Frost believes Avro will be competing in what looks like one of the strongest step five division line ups in a number of years.

“We have lost Macclesfield who were obviously operating on another planet from every other side in the league last season; however, we have gained three sides who are not quite at the same level, but are still miles ahead of everyone else in terms of fan bases and finances”, was Frost’s assessment of the arrival of Bury AFC, Isle of Man and West Didsbury and Chorlton from their respective step 6 leagues.

“Everyone knows it isn’t all about money; you can’t buy desire and determination to be the best. And we know from experience that the step up to this level from the one below is a significant one. But these sides are all ambitious to progress even further up the pyramid and they will not be looking to consolidate next season.

“We will need to be at our very best week in week out if we want to compete with them for those top two places. It’s going to be a massive challenge but we are all really looking forward to it.”

Frost’s planning for the 22-23 season has been aided by the club’s decision to offer contracts to five players for the forthcoming campaign; captain Jake Cottrell, Kane Wallwork, Liam Ellis and Joe Rathbone have all signed deals to stay with the club, while former Stockport Town captain Geffry Ebhote has been recruited to bolster the centre of the defence.

“We feel that Geffry fits the profile perfectly for the type of player that we are looking for next season,” said Frost. “He looks after himself, he’s extremely dedicated, a leader both on and off the pitch.”

Mark Dickinson, Paul Bright, Andy Pheby and Lee Watmough have joined the first team coaching set up as the club seeks to leave no stone unturned in the development and progression of the squad.

“I am delighted with what we now have in place; a group of expert coaches who I believe can get the very best out of our players,” said Frost. “It’s been a busy few weeks but now the hard work begins, and if we can get the next six weeks right, I am confident that we can hit the ground running when we start playing for points at the end of July.”

The club are also holding trials over the next two weeks for their under 21s and under 18s sides. The under 21 sessions will be on the next two Thursdays between 8pm and 9.30pm, while the under 18s try outs will be on Fridays June 17 and 24 at the same times.
