An 'unpleasant' car park in the town centre will be scrapped to make way for a block of self-contained apartments, new plans reveal.

In February this year, Debtal Architecture LTD submitted a proposal to build a detached four-storey building on a car park on Bow Street.

Blueprints of the plans show the building would create eight one-bedroom self-contained apartments, with two apartments on each level and in equal size, plus a shared garden space for the occupiers.

The documents suggest seven of the flats could accommodate two people each, and each flat has its own separate bathroom and bedroom from the living area and kitchen.

A design and access statement in support of the plans stated the current use of the car park "does not create a pleasant street scene" while the new block would deliver a "beautiful aesthetic which is both modern and also respectful".

Meanwhile, each apartment would have "natural light", ventilation, "ample storage" and a "modern" open-plan kitchen and living space.

However, the loss of the car park means the development is car-free for future occupiers of the apartments, but the site will have some secure bicycle storage.

Inspecting the proposal, planning officers found the plot of land is commonly used as ad hoc parking for businesses on Yorkshire Street and the surrounding areas.

As the applicant is looking to develop a vacant site for residential purposes, officers found the plans to be acceptable in principle.

The team was also in favour of its design and appearance, writing its red brick and anthracite grey windows would be an acceptable "palette for the area".

As for access, the site is considered to be in a sustainable location with good links to public transport, plus walking and cycling distances to a wide range of amenities.

The only objection the plans received was in relation to noise and disturbance during construction, however, planning officers said this was not a "valid reason" to refuse an application.

As a result, Oldham Council approved the plans on Friday, May 3.
